What it is
Amazon RDS for Oracle is a managed service that runs Oracle Database and automates provisioning, patching, backups, monitoring and failover. You manage the schema and workload; AWS manages the host and database software lifecycle.
Editions and licensing
- Editions: Standard Edition Two (SE2) and Enterprise Edition (EE). Available features, such as some high availability and security options, depend on the edition and its licensing.
- License Included: the Oracle license cost is part of the hourly price (available for SE2 in supported versions).
- Bring Your Own License (BYOL): you use your existing Oracle licenses. Work with Oracle licensing guidance for the exact rules on cloud instance sizing and counting.
High availability and scaling
- Multi-AZ: a synchronous standby in another Availability Zone with automatic failover.
- Read replicas: for supported editions, replicas can offload reads. Replica types and requirements depend on the edition and licensing.
- Storage: General Purpose SSD, Provisioned IOPS SSD, with storage autoscaling available. Maximum size depends on the engine version and storage type.
- Backups: automated backups with point-in-time recovery, plus manual snapshots.
Security
- Deploy in a VPC in a DB subnet group, and control access with security groups (default listener port 1521).
- Encryption at rest with AWS KMS, and SSL/TLS in transit.
- Oracle Transparent Data Encryption (TDE) and native network encryption through option groups where supported.
- Authenticate with database users, or integrate Kerberos and AWS Secrets Manager for credentials.
What is different from self-managed Oracle
- No OS access and no SYSDBA role. You get a master user with managed privileges and use RDS procedures (
rdsadminpackages) for tasks that normally need elevated rights. - Limited feature set. Options such as Oracle RAC and some advanced add-ons are not supported on standard RDS.
- Parameter and option groups control configuration instead of editing files.
- Amazon RDS Custom for Oracle is the alternative when you need OS and database customization, while keeping some managed automation.
Migration notes
- Tools: AWS Database Migration Service (DMS), Oracle Data Pump, native RMAN-based approaches for some cases, and AWS Schema Conversion Tool if moving away from Oracle.
- Plan the cut-over and rollback, character set, time zone, and patch level up front.
Watch-outs
- Licensing is the biggest cost and compliance variable. Confirm it before sizing.
- Confirm the supported versions, instance classes, and features for your region and edition in the current AWS documentation.
Quotas, limits and pricing change often. Confirm current values in the AWS documentation before designing around them.
